DIY Project: The Cheapest Methods in Paving Your Driveways using Gravel

Do you have a plan in making a durable driveway over your front yard soon yet want to make it as affordable as possible? There are various cheap material options for your driveways such as asphalt and gravel.

Gravel has been long known as a durable and affordable material for driveways. If you are determined to pave your driveways by yourself to save some money on the labor cost, gravel is the right choice for you. Gravel is not only easy to install but also easy to maintain. Here are two cheapest methods in paving your driveways using gravel you will be able to do by yourself.

Gravel Driveways

In paving a gravel driveway, what you need to prepare are shovel, rigid metal rake, gravels, and bricks. You may also need thick gardening gloves and mechanical compactor.

  • The first thing that you need to do is planning the course of your driveway. You need to do anestimation on how long your driveways are going to be and mark off the area.
  • What you need to do next is digging the ground for around 4-5 inches along where the driveway is going to take place. You may dig it deeper (around 6-7 inches) if you want the gravel driveway to be more stable.
  • The next step is delineating the way with the bricks along as a barrier between the driveway and the ground around it.
  • Pour the gravels into the dug ground in three parts. Pour the first 1/3 gravels and even them out using rigid metal rake. Then, step on them or use mechanical compactor to press on them, to make them stay in place.
  • Pour the second 1/3 part of the gravels and do the same treatment as what you did to the first layer before putting the next layer on top of it.
  • Do the last layer as the first and the second layers.

Mixed Gravel Driveways

Mixed gravel driveway is a driveway made from gravels mixed with small amount of cement mixture. What you need to prepare are shovel, rigid metal rake, gravels, bricks, and cement mixture. You may also need thick gardening gloves and wheelbarrow.

  • Paving mixed gravel driveways basically has the same method as the gravel driveways ones. The first thing is marking the course of the driveways off and delineating them with bricks around the way.
  • The next step is digging the ground. You do not need to dig the ground as deep as when you make a gravel driveway. You can just dig around 2-3 inches.
  • Make a mixture of cement and water 3:2. Then, make it into 2 parts.
  • Pour the gravel in 2 parts. After the first half has been poured out, use rigid metal rake to even it out.
  • Step on it or use mechanical compactor. Pour the first half of the cement mixture to fill the gap around the gravels. Make sure that the cement mixture does not fully cover the gravels’ body. Let it dry around for a few hours.
  • Pour the second part of the gravels. Even the out and press on them. Pour the last mixture of the cement and let it dry around a day.
