Pothole Sealing

Over a period of time, asphalt driveways can get worn out and show signs of cracking resulting in formation of potholes. Sealing the holes in potholes on asphalt surfaces, can be done successfully providing you take out time to purchase the right materials and use the right tools. In fact, right preparation and materials are the key to the perfect pothole sealing work. Since most of our roads and highways are made of asphalt, periodic maintenance to fill these potholes and reseal the surface is of utmost importance. Pothole Sealing

Test the surface

While a sleek black road top always looks nice, any effort to reseal it should be carefully looked into. The asphalt driveways, depending on exposure, can last up to five years at least before resealing is required. Never try to seal a new driveway, because the minimum time required for the materials to cure is three months under ideal conditions. In other cases the period required can go up to nine months.

To check whether your asphalt surface is in need of sealing, carry out this simple test. Wait for a hot sunny day and pour a bucket of water over portions of the driveway surface. If the surface dries quickly but uniformly, it means there is no seepage of water into the asphalt. If however, dark circles get formed, which refuse to dry, or take longer to dry then resealing is probably worthwhile.

Materials

The most popular material adopted for sealing are coal-tar based products. They are said to be much better than asphalt based sealers, as they offer greater resistance to oil, gasoline and other salts. Though asphalt based sealers emit less organic compounds and have no odor compared to coal tar compounds, they can get stained and fade from the rays of the sun faster. Another option, though a bit expensive, is an acrylic asphalt sealer, which is extremely durable and comes in colors green and red.

Preparation

Once you have selected your sealing material, make sure you have enough quantity to complete the patching up job in one application. The surface should be first got readied by cleaning with any mild household cleaning agent mixed with water, preferably with a pressure washer. A can containing five gallons of sealant will typically cover an area of about 250 square feet, depending on the age of the surface. Driveways which are old, may soak up more.

Sealing process

Start the work on a hot sunny and dry day.Take a broom with thick bristles and spread out a thick layer of sealer over a small designated patch. Work the sealant thoroughly into the surface, by using the broom at right angles. Once the seal coating has been completed, all in one go, leave it to dry. Avoid walking on it for at least four hours and use of a car on it for one full day, since the sealers tend to remain tacky for long.
